Dear Rarewoman writer,

This is my letter for ladystuck

It's a bit fandom-specific, so my apologies if you aren't writing Homestuck. Most things do still apply across the board – including loving all the other characters (at least for these canons) and wanting you to have a good time above all else.

I hope you'll find useful! Or reassuring. Or at least not overwhelming. I get excited and then just words a lot so I think the trick is to skim.

I will just add a general note or two:

For non-Homestuck canons, I can't be spoiled, so reference freely. Make things up! Also feel free to combine prompts or toss in other characters I didn't mention.

If you happen to know more than one of my canons and are interested in trying, I really enjoy crossovers and cross-canon parallels. Dairine and Kat and their robot connection jump to mind. Or... pretty much the entirety of L'Engleverse with Young Wizards. (Incidentally, other canons I hold dear to my heart include Discworld, Animorphs, Firefly, and the DCAU.) If you are able to make something like that work, I will be so pleased. But if this isn't your cup of tea, don't sweat it - I'm going to be pleased anyway!

Also, I would be interested in seeing queer sexual orientations or gender identities for. . . pretty much any of these women, whether it's casually taken for granted in the fic proper, or a addressed and developed as a plot item. (This is especially interesting for YW because identities are explicit and defined, and I've always wondered, what if you don't know yourself?) For most of these characters, the issue is never brought up, and thus open to rampant speculation! Wow, but don't feel pressured to make this happen.

TL;DR: 1) can't be spoiled 2) crossovers are excellent 3) I do like a casually queer cast - if you are so inclined!

I think that's about it, really. Thank you so much for attempting this (and having excellent tastes in fandoms). Please have fun!

Oh man, there is a lot here. These are essentially modifications of my Ladystuck prompts which mostly had more than one character focus.

Echidna AND/OR Hemera - What is it like to be a Denizen of the game? How real are they? Maybe the specific bargains they considered for their players. Bargaining with Echidna seems essential to success; Hemera, maybe... not so much. Maybe something to do with their relationship with each other or the other denizens and/or their consorts, or even Gl'bgolyb. I'd just like to see an exploration of their experiences or what it means to be a gaming construct with multiple iterations. Do they know-remember past sessions or are they like Jack and discrete with each set of players? Bonus points for some mythology thrown around and for other weird meta things. If you want to work it in, I have a general weakness for unreliable narrators, the incongruously macabre, and identity politics.

For the lady Guardians, if you are interested, I actually would really love to see them together in any combination and there is more about that following. Otherwise, character studies, slices of life, backstory or future fic. . . I really enjoy the pesterlog aspect of Homestuck.

I'm just going to toss a bunch of ideas and combinations at you - feel free to ignore this entirely. (Shipping in this case means in any kind of relationship, romantic or not, friendly or not.)

Shipping )

Of course every other combination (Jade/Roxy, Rose/Jane, etc), or OT#s, or showing relationships with other characters (such as their charges?) is totally great too. In the wise words of ao3 user pressforward that I am lifting from an email: "Sometimes you just gotta do what your heart is all up and telling you, that's just how the wicked magic of life works."

Meg Murry - an AU reverse-role future where Meg is an international figure in the field of mathematics (or something) and Calvin is a stay-at-home father for their many offspring. Political intrigue! Mundane conflicts! What stays the same and what changes? Alternatively, an exploration of went into the choice she made and how she continues to fight the good fight. She faced down evil and annihilation as a child – where did that fire go?

Suzy Austin - Future fic! I am a big fan of future fic for child characters as you'll see. After A Ring of Endless Light and during Troubling a Star, Suzy had her whole life planned out. She knew she wanted to be a vet and knew she had the brains and will to pull it off. Did it happen? Unlike what Vicky thinks, knowing what you want doesn't necessarily make it easier to get it. I want to learn more about Suzy, her struggles from her own point of view, and the person she might have become.

Young Wizards

Nita Callahan – Future fic. I'd like to see Nita as a college student or young adult, but it would also be neat to see her as an older woman, maybe a Senior. How does she casually incorporate wizardry into her life? What about her specialization or reputation? How is everyone faring in the future and who is she still in touch with? (Does she still live near the ocean?)

Dairine Callahan – Aaand future fic, I'm sorry. I'd like to see Dairine faced with daily challenges – for instance, being a woman and entering into a male-dominated field, or juggling being an adult with wizard responsibilities – and toughing through them with whatever degree of diplomacy you think best. Her situation by the latest book is somewhat unresolved, but I'm not as interested in her romantic situation so much as how she is sharpened or mellowed by difficult experiences.

Gunnerkrigg Court

Katerina Donlan – I have such a weakness for robots and artificial intelligence and Kat is all over that. I also love the surrealism of Court life – which in many ways, Kat grew up with! Any study of Kat's relationship with birds or femininity or her hilarious parents would be really great. So would an implausible action-packed random adventure. And yes, I ship Annie and Kat, in any and every capacity that retains the comforting strength of their epic bromance.

Surma Stibnite – Backstory fic? I'm interested in all of Surma's relationships with all of the members of the old cohort, both while they were students, or even after graduation. Although I'm definitely interested in the romantic drama, including Reynardine's part, I'm especially invested in her friendship with Anja, who I'm as curious about as Surma. It would be interesting to see how everyone's relationships might parallel Annie's cast. A more political angle, with her role as medium and her SPOILER background, would also be very neat.

...Please read those warnings.

She knows his body, corded muscle, minimalist angles, thin bird bones healed over from multiple fractures. He's tough on the outside in the literal sense. It's not so different from hers.

His eyes are still half-open, shades are propped on his forehead. They're misted over, but literature would have you believe the eyes of the dead lose their spark. Her brother's eyes have retained their luster, as rich and red in life as in death. She runs her fingertip across their surface and he doesn't flinch. There's a fitting way to do this.

Dear Ladystuck gifter,

Let me just say right off the bat - besides thank you! - that I know my prompts have quite a lot going on and (re-)reassure you that I don't expect you to hit everything there or even most things! That would be ridiculous. I tried to phrase all the suggestions as suggestions, but if in doubt, always do what you're comfortable with or would seem the most fun!

The same goes for this letter. :B

These clarifications are mainly directed at fic writers, but if you're an artist or interested in doing art, I will be really happy with what you make of these characters and themes. Some of them are really rare, so I will be delighted just to see them. Again, thank you!

Okay, so here we go.

As you can probably tell, I really like throw-away cameos, pesterlog styled conversations, and dialogue in general. I like my girls smart, sharp, savvy (I imagine you do too). I have a Prospit-bias, which probably doesn't show, and a bit of a human one, which does! I like balance and having full sets, so if, say, you mention Dave in the prompt with Jade and Rose, I'd also like at least a whiff of John.

I'm a polymultishipper and I love gen so... I would love it if you shipped things and I'd love it if you didn't. However, I don't really like romantic jealousy as a motivator (possessiveness is something else) or cheating/adultery-centric drama. Pining for impossible love is a tricky one – I like bittersweet resignation, but desperation wrapped in self-pity often bothers me. I like subtly dysfunctional relationships, but also comfortable, biffle ones. I like power of friendship and nebulous categories of love; if the love is undeniable, but the results are still inevitably catastrophic, well, ... fantastic.

Feel free to take liberties with canon-compliance, tone/ambiance, and levels of explicitness. I enjoy all ships, most kinks, and nothing squicks me, although I do like problematic elements (say, power differentials) to be addressed if not resolved. I like all of the characters in Homestuck so if you toss any others in, I would be delighted, but please treat them . . . not kindly, necessarily, but respectfully. Do terrible things to them, but do it with love.

As a general note of interests, I like identity politics and mutable boundaries of the self. Questions of sentience fall under here for all those of debatable humanity (evil clones and AU counterparts, artificial intelligence and robots, anthropomorphic personifications, etc). Free-will, consent, self-determination, all that good stuff. One reason there are so many Guardians in my prompts!

I really like funky meta, pseudoscience, speculative game mechanics, and the good old dramatic ironies. I like creepy, furtive politics as much as domestic fluff.

Other random things I tend to enjoy seeing: transportation (events taking place on trains, ships, motorbikes, cars, etc); expertise and instruction (when something like tuning a piano or oceanic currents is explained and somehow paralleled to a storyline); extreme temperatures; excessive banter and weighty silences; thoughtful genderfuckary; when a character experiences unexpected fondness or empathy for someone not necessarily deserving (including themselves).

In terms of art, I am often drawn to: unusual hours of the day; unusual weather conditions; high contrast, high saturation, dramatic lighting; low saturation, soft lighting, subdued effects; limited color pallets; monochrome; unusual perspectives; repetitive architecture stretching back (bridges, staircases, traintracks, etc). Not all at the same time. Ah, this is silly, I like most things, including surprises: I defer to your judgment!

Mixing elements - from here or between prompts - is totally okay; on the flipside, only use what works for you, and don't don't DON'T stress out about including everything. If you have your own ideas, I will probably like those too, so run with them! I feed on the fannish energy of others, so if you're excited about what you're doing, I will be too.

Whew! A lot of these probably aren't even relevant to my prompts. I hope that wasn't too overwhelming and that you have some fun ideas! Thank you a ton, and please have a good time!

1. [Mom Lalonde; Nanna Egbert; no pairing; no rating ] - I'd like to see their relationship in the earlier days of the beta-universe, pre-meteor-babies, maybe as a Nannasprite flashback. It would be nice if there was some kind of nod to their alpha-universe counterparts, and I especially would love dialogue or some pesterlog action. It can be platonic or shipping or even explicit, and I'm fine with fluff or sadstuck or almost any other genre, but I'd rather only the tiniest dash of horror if that's where you want to take it. Bonus points for mention of Grandpa Harley, Bro, or Dad (I love cameos in general XD).

2. [Jade Harley; Roxy Lalonde; no pairing; no rating] I feel like these two would get along like a house on fire. A fire they may have started themselves. They have quite a few things in common (carapaces! guns! gadgets!) but are from completely different universes. What could they commiserate about or teach each other? Or what kind of trouble could they get into, either on a large-scale let's-fuck-with-the-game level, or a smaller, facepalming one? It would be nice to catch a glimpse of the other kids. I *think* I'd prefer a positive relationship, established or otherwise, shippy or otherwise, but make it horrible if that's what you like. (Er, and you don't have to take this into consideration, but I'm a Dave/Jade shipper along with being a ridiculous multishipper.)

3. [Alpha Jade English; Alpha Rose Lalonde; pairing?; no rating] - I would like to see dimension-hopping, time-traveling Jade interact with public-figure, political-assassin Rose. For this one, definitely a positive relationship, please; at least friends if not more. Maybe Jade helps Rose set up the lab for Roxy, or Rose has prescient-based advice for Jade. Both of them are or will be powerful, doomed women and I'd like to see how that scariness and the rebellion blend into their relationship. I don't mind when in their respective timelines you take them from or how large their age gap may be. As if I haven't been predictable enough: nods to their beta-universe counterparts appreciated!

4. [Mom Lalonde; Alphaverse Rose; no pairing; no rating] - Kind of breaking across the walls of time-space here, but I want to see what kind of relationship these two could have had, given a chance, however that could be contrived to happen - especially with both of them being Guardians and the twist this may add to their perspectives. What do Guardians get up to while their kids are busy and how do they know to do it? I'd like it to be relatively canon-compliant (as opposed to an extreme AU universe). I'd also like intimacy or at least familiarity (and closure!), but it doesn't have to be a positive or healthy interaction. Trainwrecks are fun too! And I'd love some pesterlog action if you can manage it.

5. [Echidna; no pairing; no rating] - What is it like to be a Denizen of the game? How real is she, *really*? Maybe the specific bargains she may have considered for Jade/Kanaya/ Porrim/ Calliope. Or maybe something to do with her relationship with Typhus and/or the consorts. I'd just like to see an exploration of her experiences or what it means to be a gaming construct with multiple iterations. Bonus points for some mythology thrown around and for other weird meta things. If you want to work it in, I have a general weakness for unreliable narrators, the incongruously macabre, and identity politics.
